Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery: How to Get Back on Track

Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery: How to Get Back on Track

Have you ever reached your weight loss goal, felt proud of how far you'd come, and then found yourself watching the scale creep back up? I honestly thought weight regain would never happen to me. After losing 120 pounds with the help of vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery in August 2022, I had worked hard to reach my goals and maintain my weight loss. But during a difficult period in my life, I struggled with depression and regained about 20 pounds. It was frustrating, and I had to figure out how to move forward. If you're struggling with weight regain after bariatric surgery, GLP-1 treatment, or another weight loss journey, I want you to know something important: you are not broken, and you have not failed. Weight fluctuations happen, and regain doesn't erase all the progress you've already made.

When I decided to address my weight regain, I knew I didn't want to fall back into the cycle of crash dieting and trying to lose weight as quickly as possible. I'd tried restrictive approaches before, and I knew they weren't the answer to sustainable weight management. Instead of going back to my pre-surgery diet or attempting a so-called pouch reset, I focused on identifying the healthy habits that had helped me succeed in the first place. I had become too relaxed about drinking enough water, exercising consistently, strength training, and paying attention to my food intake. Those were the areas where I needed to make changes. Your habits might look completely different from mine, and that's okay! The goal isn't to copy someone else's routine. It's to honestly evaluate what's changed in your own life and identify the realistic steps that can help you feel better and move toward your goals again.

One of the most helpful things I did was shift my focus away from losing a specific number of pounds by a certain date. Instead, I gave myself a realistic timeline to rebuild my habits. My 100 Days to Disney Challenge became the perfect opportunity to focus on getting back into a consistent routine before our vacation. I had a meaningful goal to work toward, but I wasn't treating those 100 days as a race to lose 20 pounds. I was using that time to practice the behaviors I wanted to maintain long after the challenge ended. You don't need a Disney vacation or a big event to do something similar. Try choosing a manageable timeframe and setting goals around actions you can control, such as drinking enough water, moving your body regularly, incorporating strength training when appropriate, or becoming more mindful of your eating habits. When you focus on what you can do consistently instead of obsessing over the number on the scale, the process can feel much more manageable.

Another important lesson I've learned about overcoming weight regain is to work on one habit at a time. It's tempting to overhaul your entire life when you feel frustrated with your progress. You might want to change your diet, start exercising every day, track every bite, and completely transform your routine overnight. But trying to do everything at once can quickly become overwhelming. Instead, identify the habit that feels easiest to restart and focus on making it part of your everyday life. For me, improving my hydration was a practical place to begin, and using a water bottle with time markers helped me stay mindful of my progress throughout the day. Once one habit feels more established, you can gradually work on the next. Sustainable weight loss and long-term weight maintenance aren't about finding a magic trick. They're about creating repeatable routines that fit your real life, even when things get busy or challenging.

Most importantly, please give yourself grace throughout this process. Rebuilding healthy habits takes time, and you don't have to get everything right every single day. There will be difficult weeks, unexpected life events, and moments when your routine falls apart. That doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're human! Whether you're navigating weight regain after gastric sleeve surgery, adjusting to life after GLP-1 treatment, or simply trying to get back into healthier routines, you deserve an approach that supports your physical and emotional well-being. If you've had bariatric surgery and are concerned about regain, consider reaching out to your bariatric care team or a registered dietitian for personalized guidance. You don't have to figure everything out alone. I'd love to hear from you, too: what's one healthy habit you'd like to reestablish right now? Share it in the comments if you're comfortable. Let's keep encouraging one another, celebrating our progress, and remembering that lasting change happens one small step at a time! 💗
